Kwikset Kevo Smart Lock

The new age of smart devices is expanding and that means the new wave of Kwikset Kevo smart locks are under scrutiny.

Case in point is the Kwikset Kevo smart lock that people are now having installed. This device can be self installed and has cylinders like a regular lock.  The difference is that you don’t use keys, but instead your smart phone or other Bluetooth capable device.

The concerns are that a device like this that uses wireless technology might be easy to hack and manipulate.  One can however, adjust the settings on these locks to prevent such measures to a good degree.  Installing this kind of lock is a full install, not a retro-fit.  If you’re not knowledgeable on how to install a lock then get a professional or someone savvy enough to.

The device is a bit on the bulky side.  It looks normal on the outside but on the inside is a big bracket to accommodate the technology involved including batteries and wires.  It’s a real lock, mind you, but a new type of lock that is just as strong as the traditional but using wireless to open and shut.

New technologies have the challenge of having to be tested through time.  That’s what these new smart locks are going to have to face and overcome.  This device is the state of the art, but it’s apparent from simple installation that it has some design and engineering things to overcome.  It’s a lock, a strong one, but the hardware and the software has to match seamlessly and that means fine tuning.

That may come over the months and years to come regarding what the research and development teams are going to face.  That and customer feedback as to the efficiency of the locks themselves.  With the battery operation, one doesn’t have to worry about power outages nor dependency on other power sources.  The Bluetooth wireless security is the challenge to watch out for.  Will it continue to work under all conditions or will it call for more tweaking down the road?  Will hackers finally figure out how to compromise the security calling for an upgrade in firmware of software?  Only time will tell but it’s not a good idea to think that this present device is the be all and end all to this kind of product.

So for now, this is one of the top devices out there but we’ll have to wait to see what comes up down the road.
